Gases measured in petrol, CNG, and LPG vehicles
A gas analyzer measures the following components in the exhaust of petrol, compressed natural gas (CNG), and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) vehicles:
- Carbon Monoxide (CO): This is a toxic, odorless gas produced by incomplete combustion. High CO levels indicate that the air-fuel mixture is too rich or that the engine is not burning fuel efficiently.
- Hydrocarbons (HC): These are unburned or partially burned fuel particles that contribute to the formation of smog. High HC levels suggest a faulty ignition system, misfiring spark plugs, or other combustion problems.
- Carbon Dioxide (CO2cap C cap O sub 2𝐶𝑂2): This gas is a product of complete combustion. Analyzing
CO2cap C cap O sub 2𝐶𝑂2 levels provides a comprehensive picture of the vehicle’s environmental impact and helps determine overall combustion efficiency.
- Oxygen (O2cap O sub 2𝑂2): Modern machines measure oxygen levels in the exhaust to determine the engine’s air-fuel ratio (AFR). Abnormal oxygen levels can indicate issues with the oxygen sensor or other engine problems.
- Nitrogen Oxides (NOx): This group of toxic gases (including NO and
NO2cap N cap O sub 2𝑁𝑂2) is formed when nitrogen and oxygen react at the high temperatures and pressures inside an engine. Some advanced analyzers include a sensor for NOx measurement.
- Lambda (λlambda𝜆): This value is a ratio of the air-fuel mixture. The analyzer uses the measured oxygen levels to calculate the lambda value, which is a key diagnostic parameter for emissions control.
Measurements for diesel vehicles
For diesel vehicles, a different machine, called a smoke meter or opacity meter, is used to measure the density of the exhaust smoke.
Smoke Opacity: The smoke meter measures the density of the black smoke emitted from the exhaust. It indicates how much soot or particulate matter (PM) is being released. High smoke opacity often points to poor fuel combustion, engine wear, or a malfunctioning fuel injection system.
